Juanita Yoder, A Quiet Example to Us All
(Part of a series of articles on charitable giving and the Union County Foundation by David Vollrath - Exec. Dir.)

Sometimes the most significant acts of charity occur with the least amount of fanfare. Examples of humility and charity aren’t always found at the same time…sometimes they are. Recently I received a correspondence from Richwood attorney Scott Hoffman of Evans, Evans, and Hoffman law firm. Mr. Hoffman was writing to inform the Foundation that the Evans firm was settling the estate of West Mansfield resident Juanita Yoder and that the Union County Foundation was to receive a meaningful portion of the estate to establish the LaVerne and Juanita Yoder Charitable Fund. The Fund will benefit specific fields of interest named by Ms. Yoder and support scholarships to members of her beloved church family. This information came to us with no great fanfare, no public proclamation, no strings or conditions, no quid pro quo. This was purely an act of humility, charity, and generosity. The selfless act was from a woman of means, who lived a conservative existence, and sought only to leave this earth in a bit better shape then she found it. Neither myself nor any member of our board had ever met Juanita Yoder. None of us had any direct communications with her regarding her present or future charitable intent. Fortunately the professional advisors (attorneys, CPA’s, CFP’s etc.) of this County have come to understand that the Foundation is a wonderful tool for allowing individuals and organizations to fulfill their charitable goals. Working closely with Ms. Yoder, attorney Scott Hoffman was able to advise an estate plan that included this wonderful act of charity. Juanita Yoder’s substantial gift will continue to do considerable good for many years to come. Her act of charity and humility is a wonderful example and model to us all.

Maybe you share some of Juanita Yoder’s vision for charitable giving. Maybe you too are in a position to leave a legacy that will make a difference in our communities. But maybe you just aren’t sure how to shape your dream into reality. The Union County Foundation encourages you to work closely with your professional advisor(s) as you consider your present and future charitable goals, which may include the formation of a named scholarship fund or named field of interest fund. The Foundation is equipped to help you achieve your charitable goals by providing: planned giving and estate planning resource information, charitable gift annuities/life income plans, and a broad array of charitable choices.
