(Part of a series of articles on charitable giving and the Union County Foundation by David Vollrath - Exec. Dir.) This is the time of year when many of you are celebrating the graduation experiences of friends and family. May and June traditionally are full of graduation ceremonies marking the beginning of the much longed for summer vacation period. In just a few short weeks many of today’s graduating high school students will embark on their new college careers and today’s graduating college students will span out across the land pursuing careers while taking the first steps into their adult lives. Graduation is indeed a wonderful milestone! One of the best parts of my job as the Foundation’s executive director is the chance to participate in the awarding of scholarships to many graduating Union County students. These last few weeks the Foundation has been involved in the administration and placement of over $47,800 worth of scholarship awards to 54 outstanding male and female Union County students. These scholarships represent 13 different named Scholarship Funds housed within the Foundation and represent underlying Funds totaling over $1,000,000. Scholarship Funds represent the single fastest growing segment of the Foundation’s assets. What does this indicate? It says to me that many people have come to understand how they can easily impact the lives of our graduates in a positive way by initiating a scholarship fund. It also indicates that many are realizing that establishing a charitable legacy that inves+ts in our youth’s education through scholarships is an extremely meaningful and gratifying act. Benefactors will tell you they would be hard pressed to find a more lasting or impactful place to direct a portion of their financial resources. In good old mid-western to the point language…It feels good to do good. Some people may conclude the idea of establishing a scholarship fund is a bit too restrictive. They may reason that they would like to establish a charitable fund that supports education but is not restricted solely to the awarding of scholarships. The Foundation offers a wonderful solution. In this case a donor need simply establish an education field of interest fund. This option would allow for the awarding of scholarships but would also provide latitude to financially support other education related projects. Other current field of interest categories for which a named fund could be initiated include: Arts, Culture, Churches, Environmental, Healthcare, Recreation, Youth, and Senior Citizens. Beyond these specific categories if a donor has a particular charitable vision the Foundation will make every effort to shape that dream into reality. The Union County Foundation encourages you to work closely with your professional advisor(s) as you consider your present and future charitable goals which may include the formation of a named scholarship fund or named field of interest fund. The Foundation is equipped to help you achieve your charitable goals by providing: planned giving and estate planning resource information, charitable gift annuities/life income plans, and a broad array of charitable choices.
