Retired & Wired
(Part of a series of articles on charitable giving and the Union County Foundation by David Vollrath - Exec. Dir.)

Here are some very telling statistics regarding Internet use by the older generations. Recent surveys indicate that approximately 100 million individuals over the age of 50 are regularly "online." Indications are that individuals age 55 and older comprise the fastest growing group of Internet users. Fully 20% of those who started using the Internet over the past year were age 50 or above. In light of this data you might be surprised to learn that according to The Kaiser Family Foundation survey of older Americans only 31% of seniors age 65 and older have ever gone online but more than 70% of the next generation of seniors (age 50-64) have gone online. What does this all mean? It means that as time goes on more and more seniors will be part of the retired & wired group that as a matter of normal daily living uses the Internet for communication and information gathering. Seniors will continue at increasingly large rates to use the Internet for financial information, on-line shopping, health information, and even to research their favorite charitable organizations.

If you are a senior who has not yet taken the plunge I encourage you to do so. The learning process is really pretty easy. Classes/instructions to get you started are offered at most libraries and many senior centers. Don’t forget your many family members who likely would be more than happy to get you started. With a little effort and relatively minor investment you can be better connected to family members who live out of the area or even out of the country. There is literally a world of information awaiting you.

The nature of charitable giving is such that often times seniors comprise the population most able and most likely to support philanthropic causes.
