(Part of a series of articles on charitable giving and the Union County Foundation by David Vollrath - Exec. Dir.) In the words of Charles Dickens … It was the best of times and the worst of times. As parents we all have certain goals and milestones in our lives. In raising two boys my wife and I always considered getting both of the kids raised and into college to be a significant milestone. The good news is that we did in fact reach that milestone a couple years ago; the bad news is that the milestone was reached for both our boys at the same time…two kids in non-public universities at the same time. This time in life might best be characterized as the DON’T years (Double Outflow, No Travel). One significant way to reduce the financial burden of post secondary education is by taking advantage of available scholarship programs. Union County is blessed to have available quite a number of scholarships designed specifically to benefit Union County graduating seniors. This is the season (many have deadlines of April 15) when applications for these various and numerous scholarships are being processed for consideration and award selection. Currently housed within the Union County Foundation are 10 Scholarship Funds that in 2004 benefited approximately 25 Union County students. These scholarships represent but a fraction of the total that are awarded every year, and generally administered through the various high school guidance departments. Having the chance to work closely with many of these scholarships I can tell you that many opportunities for financial awards are missed because students do not apply. This phenomenon continues to be a source of frustration for those individuals, families, and organizations that have initiated the Scholarship Funds. Many of the scholarships are specifically designed to reward students that aren’t necessarily ranked academically anywhere near the top of their class but display other important qualities. The point is that there likely are scholarship opportunities for all students…including yours. The Union County Foundation encourages you to consider your present and future charitable goals. Perhaps those goals may include the establishment of your own Scholarship Fund. The Foundation is equipped to help you achieve these goals by providing: planned giving and estate planning resource information, charitable gift annuities/life income plans, and a broad array of charitable choices.
