Making a Real Difference
It has been said that if you aren’t moving forward then likely you are falling
behind. Union County is anything but static and its people are not afraid of progress. The presence of a Community
Foundation is indicative of an alive and vibrant community that understands the future can be positively impacted
by present day philanthropic activity. The Union County Foundation serves as a catalyst for just such activity
and as an organization to help shape charitable inclinations into real world applications.
Highlights of the past year include the distribution of college scholarships to 16 outstanding high school seniors,
grants of financial support to the Community Care Train, the Memorial Hospital Women’s Health Center, and Union
County Community Services to name just a few. Charitable giving through local Fraternal Organizations’ Benevolence
Funds was substantial in 2005; over 40 organizations benefited from the more than $270,000 in grants.
The coordinated efforts of numerous individuals and organizations resulted in combining man-power and dollars in
ways that benefited many projects throughout our county. One central theme rings constant: giving, improving, and
strengthening Union County for generations to come.
Scholarship Funds continue to be an important part of the Foundation’s work as evidenced by the addition of several
new funds in 2005. These scholarships help local youth pursue academic goals by easing the financial burden of
attending college. In 2005 scholarships of $37,815 were awarded through The Union County Foundation, supported
through funds established by the Charles W. Green Family, the Dan B. Kyle Family, the Kiwanis Club, the Kern Family,
the Conlon Family, The MacIvor Family, the McElheny Family, the Sara Mae Burnside family, and the Kathleen Imbody
Family. More information on these scholarships can be found throughout the annual report.
The Union County Foundation’s broad menu of "gifting options" assures our benefactors that we can offer
the correct charitable vehicle for virtually any circumstance. Some gifts are as basic as writing a check or donating
cash. The Foundation accommodates other donors by accepting stocks, real estate, life insurance policies, collectibles,
art, or other personal property. A wonderful charitable vehicle preferred by many is to establish their own "donor
advised fund" or initiate a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust to benefit the charity of
their choice. We welcome the opportunity to assist the people and organizations of Union County in fulfilling their
philanthropic goals. After all...that’s why we are here!
